Blog - Embossing press for conceptual artist Dawn Cole

For the past 3 years Dawn Cole has been making work in response to a small family archive containing the diary, photos and personal belongings of Clarice Spratling.

Clarice was a young VAD Nurse who volunteered in 1915 and was posted to France where she served for the duration of WW1. Dawn Cole’s work develops as a result of extensive research and has included works that appear to be fine lace, but are in fact made from the words from Clarice’s diary, wreaths made from 100’s of small prints that resemble 1915 shillings and hand printed paper tissues embellished with silver and gold leaf.

Here at Speedy Stamps we assisted Dawn with her latest body of work; we were approached as she was looking for an embossing machine that could be used to emboss lead sheets. Dawn sent through a sample of the lead and our Production Team performed some quality testing to determine which one of our embossing machines would be suitable for the job. Our creative customer then sent through some of her drawings and we supplied Dawn with an Ideal Embossing machine.  This machine was subsequently used to create a French Immortelle wreath made from embossed lead which looks like shillings (pressed from Dawn’s very own drawings).

The work was in preparation for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Trinity Gallery, Tunbridge Wells in May. Take a look at the pictures below, look how great her embossed lead shillings look! Dawn Cole exhibits internationally and has work in the V&A, London, permanent collection.
